The last of the first-generation Camaros is considered by many enthusiasts to be the most popular one. The concept behind the new design was to make the Camaro look more “aggressive.” The new body provided a longer, lower and wider appearance and had sculpted body sides. The wheel wells were flattened with sculptured feature lines flowing off them toward the rear of the car and rear-slanting air slots ahead of the rear wheel. An RS/SS convertible with a 396-cid Turbo-Jet V-8 under its hood paced the 1969 Indy 500 and this time Chevrolet sold replicas of the pace car to the public starting on Feb. 4, 1969. Experts say 3,675 of these Z11 convertibles were made, along with a few hundred hardtops with a rare Z10 Indy Sport Coupe package.

Chevrolet started promoting the Camaro as the “Hugger” this year and even had a Hugger Orange paint color for those who really wanted to catch attention on the street. The name, however, did not really stick and was rarely heard after 1970.

A new 307-cid base V-8 was added to the Camaro’s engines list, as was an optional 250-cid straight six with 15 hp more than the standard inline six. Performance buffs could chose between the 350-cid and 396-cid V-8 offerings. Those who wanted to go even faster down a drag strip had the option of visiting a handful of dealerships across the country that would gladly stuff a 427-cid “Rat” motor into a Camaro for mucho bucks.

Chevy built 211,922 Camaros at Norwood in 1969, plus 31,163 more in Van Nuys.

Camaros had a 13-symbol vehicle identification number (VIN) on the upper left surface of the instrument

panel, visible through the windshield. The first symbol identifies the make: 1=Chevrolet Motor Div. The second symbol indicates the car line/series: 2=Camaro. The third symbol indicates the type of engine: odd number=inline six-cylinder, even number=V-8. The fourth and fifth symbols indicate body type: 37=two-door hardtop coupe and 67=convertible. The sixth symbol indicates model year: 9=1969. The seventh symbol indicates the assembly plant: N=Norwood, Ohio and L=Van Nuys (Los Angeles) California. The final six digits are the sequential serial number starting with 500001 at each plant regardless of series. The Fisher Body Style Number plate was located on the firewall below the rear of the hood. The code in the left upper position was ST 69 12337 NOR, ST 69 12367, ST 69 12437 NOR or ST 69 12467. The first two symbols ST stand for “Style.” The third and fourth symbols indicate model year: 69=1969 model. The fifth symbol indicates the division: 1=Chevrolet. The sixth and seventh symbols indicate series: 23=Camaro six-cylinder or 24=Camaro V-8. The eighth and ninth symbols indicate body style: 37=twodoor coupe, 67=two-door convertible. The last three symbols indicate the assembly plant: NOR=Norwood, Ohio, LOS=Van Nuys, California. This plate also carries codes indicating the body production sequence at the specific plant, interior trim (TR), exterior paint (PNT), the month and week of the month of production (1A=January, first week, etc.) and other special codes.

10=Tuxedo Black, 40=Butternut Yellow, 50=Dover White, 51=Dusk Blue, 52=Garnet Red, 53=Glacier Blue, 55=Azure Turquoise, 57=Fathom Green, 59=Frost Green, 61=Burnished Brown, 63=Champagne, 65= Olympic Gold, 67=Burgundy, 69=Cortez Silver, 71= LeMans Blue, 72=Hugger Orange, 76=Daytona Yellow, 79=Rallye Green. Two-tone color combinations available were 53/50 (Glacier Blue/ Dover White), 55/50 (Azure Turquoise/Dover White), 53/51 Glacier Blue/Dusk Blue, 51/53 Dusk Blue/Glacier Blue, 65/50 Olympic Gold/Dover White and 61/63 Burnished Brown/Champagne.

At the front of standard Camaros was a grille with 13 slender vertical moldings and five horizontal moldings forming a grid surrounded by a bright molding. A badge with the Chevrolet bow-tie emblem was in the center. There were single round headlamps near both outer ends of the grille. The full-width bumper integrated with the body-color outer grille surround and there was a license plate holder in the center of the valance panel. Round parking lights were positioned on either side of the license plate. At the rear were wider taillight bezels with triple-segment lenses.
