CAMARO INDY SPORT CONVERTIBLE (INDY 500 OFFICIAL PACE CAR REPLICA) – MODEL 12467 + 211 – V-8

The first Camaro had served as Official Pace Car for the 1967 Indianapolis 500-Mile Race and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That year, only a limited number of actual Indy 500 Pace Cars and “Official Cars” were made and these were not intended for sale to the public as new cars. In 1969, Chevrolet was invited to supply a Camaro Pace Car once again. By this time auto sales were in a slump and the company decided to get extra mileage out of the promotional effort by creating the RPO Z11 “Indy Sport Convertible” package. A confidential Chevrolet Passenger Car Product Bulletin issued on Feb. 4, 1969, described this option as “Midseason Change No. 13″ and stated the following: “A new Regular Production Option (Z11) will be released to provide a modified Camaro SS/RS Convertible similar to the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car. The RPO Z11 is comprised of: Camaro SS/Rally Sport (Camaro SS RPO Z27 with Rally Sport equipment RPO Z22). With exceptions: Add hood and deck lid Hugger Orange paint stripes, same as used with RPO Z28. Body sill to be white instead of black. Rear panel to be white instead of black, as specified with 396 V-8 engine options. Remove Sport Striping (reference RPO D90). Add Hugger Orange fender striping (reference RPO D96, part of RPO Z22). Exterior body color, Dover White, Code 911. Custom interior, RPO Z87 with exceptions: Orange houndstooth trim, Code 720. Air Induction Hood, RPO ZL2. Rally wheel, hub cap and trim ring, RPO ZJ7. To be identical with the actual pace car, additional

options are required: Turbo-Hydra-Matic RPO M40, Positraction rear Axle RPO G80, power steering RPO N40, power convertible top RPO C06, Console RPO D55, special instrumentation RPO U17, AM radio RPO U63, air spoiler, front and rear RPO D80, Sport styled steering wheel RPO N34, custom deluxe seat and front shoulder belts (A39 & A85) RPO YA1, Soft-Ray tinted glass RPO A01. — R.C. Mumbrum, Sales Liaison Engineer.” The Z11 option was available for SS/RS convertibles with the 350-cid 300-hp V-8 or with 396-cid V-8s. Pace car door decals that read “Chevrolet Camaro OFFICIAL PACE CAR, 53rd ANNUAL INDIANAPOLIS 500 MILE RACE MAY 30, 1969″ were available with the Z11 option, but not mandatory. The decals were shipped inside the trunk of the cars for installation at the dealership level, if the customer desired the lettering. Pace cars were produced at both the Norwood and Van Nuys assembly plants. The cars built in Ohio had “Z11″ stamped on the Fisher Body cowl tag and the California built cars did not.

CAMARO INDY SPORT COUPE – MODEL 12437 + Z10 – V-8

Camaro club enthusiasts have documented that a Pace Car Sport Coupe was offered as a promotional model by the Chevrolet Southwest Sales Zone and sold in a number of states, including Arizona, Oklahoma, Texas and Wisconsin. The package was coded as RPO Z10 and was for the Camaro coupe with RS/SS equipment. These were similar to the Z11 convertible on the outside, but had some interior differences such as black (standard, custom or houndstooth) and ivory (standard and houndstooth) interior choices, in addition to orange houndstooth. They also came with the optional wood-grained steering wheel, ComforTilt steering wheel, a vinyl top and other options. It is believed that the Norwood factory built 200 to 300 of these cars.

CAMARO Z/28 – SERIES 24 + Z/28 – V-8

In 1969, the popularity of the Camaro Z/28 achieved a three-year high with production climbing from 602 in 1967 to 7,199 in 1968 to 20,302 in 1969. To a large degree, the boom in interest was generated by the 1969 Z/28s that Roger Penske’s racing team campaigned in the Sports Car Club of America’s Trans-Am series. Penzke’s dark blue and yellow Camaros appeared in Sunoco gasoline advertisements, as well as in promotions for Sears Die-Hard batteries. The Z/28 package was available for Camaro Sport Coupes with power disc brakes and a four-speed manual transmission. A Positraction rear axle (as an extra-cost option) was recommended to go with the package. In addition to or in place of that model’s standard equipment, the Z/28 featured a special 302-cid V-8, a dual exhaust system with deep-tone mufflers, a special front suspension, a special rear suspension, rear bumper guards, a heavy-duty radiator, a temperature-controlled de-clutching fan, quick-ratio steering, 15 x 7-in. Rally wheel rims, special E70-15 white-letter tires, a 3.73:1 ratio rear axle and special Rally stripes on the hood and rear deck lid. Some changes were made to the content and prices of the Z/28 package during the model year. The original cost in September, 1968, was $458.15. In October, the engine got bright accents, a chambered exhaust system became available, as did four-wheel disc brakes. In January 1969, due to problems with noise regulations, the chambered exhaust system was dropped, a tachometer was required at extra cost and the price went up $15.80. On April 1 the price climbed by $32.65 and a front valance panel and rear deck lid spoiler became mandatory options. In May, chrome exhaust pipe tips were made standard Z/28 equipment. September 1969 of the stretched model year brought another $15.80 price increase.
